What questions should you be asking when buying new company laptops?

Like any business expense, new company laptops are a purchase that needs to be thoroughly thought through. IT hardware can eat up a significant proportion of a business budget and so it’s important to ensure that you get a return on that investment. From hitting the right price point, to ensuring suitability to the job, there is a lot to consider in purchasing new laptops for the business. So, here are a few of the key questions that you’ll need to consider.

What’s the budget?

Laptops come in many different forms and formats these days so there is a lot of choice with respect to how much you pay for your tech. You could spend a couple of hundred pounds on a very basic piece of hardware or go up into the thousands for something much more advanced. Before you begin the process of buying new company laptops, set out the budget so that you know exactly how much you want to spend, as well as the features you expect from machines in different price points.

Which operating system appeals the most?

Theoretically, you have a choice of three: Apple OS X, Chrome OS or Windows OS. If your budget is low then your choice may be restricted to the latter two. Apple has historically been the favourite of creative industries but there has been significant push on the part of the other two to change this in recent times. Opting for Windows is a good general choice and one that will tend to deliver more options when it comes to laptop models, as well as what might be an easier budgetary fit. Chrome is a newer player in the market and has evolved from being purely aimed at students to being made fit for the business market – one of the most attractive features is that it automatically deploys updates, which can be useful for company hardware.

How do the specifications compare?

If you’re starting to get an idea of which laptops appeal but you’re struggling to make a decision then it helps to compare three important specifications: CPU, battery and memory and storage. All of these will impact on the way that the laptops perform and how effective they are for your business.

CPU – the central processing unit is the processor and powers the laptop. The better the CPU is, the better the laptop performance will be. The Intel Pentium processor is a good example of a low range CPU, whereas the Intel Core i7 processor sits at the top and the Intel Core i5 processor somewhere in the middle.

Battery – the length of battery life will be important if the laptop is going to spend a lot of time not plugged in so it’s information worth comparing.

Memory and storage – a hard drive of around 256GB works fine for most company laptops and memory (RAM) of 4GB and above will produce high performance results.

What kind of aesthetics fit?

This is the last consideration and probably the least important. However, if you have a brand image that you need your hardware to confirm to then it’s something to consider, as not all laptops look the same.
